History

The first plane on Curaçao

In 1923 the first airplane, an American seaplane, has landed on Curaçao. The landing took place in the natural harbor of Curaçao, called “Schottegat”. The arrival of this seaplane initiated the start of airplane flights to Curaçao. Sociedad Colombo-Alemana Transportes Aereos (SCADTA) had used this location for some years for seaplane flights between Curaçao and Colombia.

Background

The Ministry of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning of Curaçao consists of several departments. The Curaçao Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA) is the department within the Ministry and the government regulatory authority which is responsible and accountable for the civil aviation administration on Curaçao.

The Curaçao Civil Aviation Authority has gone through several organizational phases. For years the CCAA has been the department that oversees all aviation regulatory activities in the former Netherlands Antilles and currently Curaçao.

The Civil Aviation Act Official Gazette – 2001 No. 151 (Luchtvaartlandsverordening) promulgated on 20 December 2001, is the primary aviation legislation of Curaçao. The core responsibilities are outlined in the last mentioned act. Additional functions traditionally carried out by aeronautical authorities are not outlined.
